Once upon a time, a person was bawling beside their loved one in a casket. This person ‘told’ the deceased how much they loved them, and that they missed them, and wished the person was still alive. Some who stood around witnessing this ‘talk’ knew the relationship between the two while the one was alive – toxic, unkind, painful, un-Christlike. Sagas of this kind happen quite a bit, sorry to say. Why?In my daughter’s apartment, there is a framed saying: In a world where you can be anything, be kind. I believe kindness is a spiritual discipline that’s possible in tough circumstances only if a person is in genuine relationship with the Lord Jesus. Here’s some counsel from God’s Word on this matter:Colossians 3:12: Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.Proverbs 21:21: Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor.I Corinthians 13:4: Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous, boastful, or proud.Ephesians 4:32: Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.My brothers and sisters: in this world where you can be anything, for heaven’s sake, be kind. Don’t wait till the ‘casket talk.’
