Spoons

Playing Spoons is fun for me. This is how it is played: Folk sit at a table to play. If there are five players, then four spoons are placed on the table. All players are dealt four playing cards. As the game progresses, players take turns picking a card from the stack on the table, trying to collect four cards of the same kind. The one who gets the collection first snags a spoon from the table. Immediately, the other four lunge to pick a spoon for themselves. Inevitably one of the players is left without a spoon, and so is out of the game. The next round continues, with three spoons on the table, and so on.

Some people seem to think that salvation/eternal life is like playing Spoons – you play your hand well, keep your eye on the prize, and leap forward at the appropriate time to secure a spot for the next round.  The Word of God gives the only way to salvation. I John 5: 11-13: Here is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life (emphasis mine).

The Bible is very clear: Salvation/eternal life is available only in the Lord Jesus Christ, not in what I do or don’t do. The only thing, then, that I do, according to the Scriptures, is to be in Jesus all the time. Then my salvation is secure. Any additions or tangents detract from the gospel. Are you in Jesus? I hope you are. Then you are safe. —
